Restoring a Classic Car: 71 Dodge Dart Swinger Part 3

Sorry for the long delay in posting.  A lot has been going on here at Chrome City Oil but thats not a reason to not keep up on blogging.  Be sure to like us on Facebook and follow on Twitter as its easy to do quick updates or blogs on there and I always post/tweet when new blogs are posted.  Anyway back to the blog.

After getting the block torn down I began to clean and prep for paint.  Now this isn’t going to be a show car but I want it to at least be presentable so the almost 40 years of grime from being in a 4×4 truck and sitting outside had to go.  I gave just scraping the block of its decades of grime but found that to be a long and painful process.  So I used some AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Degreaser to help get everything as clean as I could.  I sprayed the Heavy-Duty Degreaser on the block and let it eat away at the grime.  The spray has a nice citrus smell and was able to really breakdown the layers of grime.  Since this block was really dirty it still took a little bit of scraping to really get it to clean up but the Heavy-Duty Degreaser really saved me a ton of time.

Cleaned Block

After cleaning the block it was time to spray it with high temp engine paint.  I went with HEMI orange, which besides being an iconic color for Mopars would also be the correct color for this motor in 71.  I masked off any openings on the block and used the box that my head gaskets came in to “mask” the block’s deck from paint.

Painted Block

Now with a painted block we are one step closer to assembly!  We’ll start that during the next update.
