Restoring a Classic Car: 71 Dodge Dart Swinger Part 2

Now this motor had been sitting outside covered by an old tonneau cover for at least 10 years.  So the first thing I did before I even put the motor on the engine stand was spray AMSOIL Metal Protect (MP) down the cylinder walls.  I did this to help break any lingering bonds the cylinders had with the cylinder walls.  Much to my shock the motor actually did turn over.  That meant I might be able to get away without redoing the whole bottom end of the motor!

Knowing I have a free spinning motor I went ahead and put the motor on the engine stand for some disassembly.  After soaking every bolt I could find with MP I started tearing into the motor.  Thanks to the quick soaking it didn’t take much time to get everything broken down.  If I could give one tip here its making sure you keep track of your bolts and where you are taking them from. I ended up having to buy a few bolts because I lost track of where the ones I needed went.

Here are some pics of a disassembled Mopar 440!

Be sure to come back often as I will continue to update this build as I move through this process.
